ALBRIGHTON & DISTRICT

CIVIC SOCIETY

(Albrighton, Boningale, Donington-with-Boscobel & Tong)

We are back!

We are pleased to be able to make a contribution to the parish magazine once again. During this pandemic we have continued to hold our monthly committee meeting on Zoom but a lot of our activities have been curtailed as has everyone else’s.

School Awards Scheme All the three schools had agreed with the topic St Mary’s Church for this year’s scheme. The scheme is of course subject to the schools being able to operate during the Covid period.

Defibrillator outside Red House The defibrillator had disappeared from its cabinet and it was not clear if it had been stolen (but no damage to the cabinet) or used and not taken back. As the time/date of its removal was unknown it was not possible to check the CCTV. We are grateful that the First Responders leader had kindly provided a replacement and we understand that the Parish Clerk has now arranged for a walk past visual check to be made each day so that if it is removed in future it will be easier to  check the CCTV.

East of Shaw Lane development There is no news of the future plans for the northern part of the site which is owned by Jessup Brothers and whose planning application was refused and appeal was rejected.

Whiteacres Development (between High St and Garridge Close) The Society opposed this as it was felt that it would amount to overdevelopment and did not meet the terms of the Shropshire Council local plan which zoned it as development for homes for the elderly. No further news about this.

Station Parking The local MP, Mark Pritchard, has been contacted many times for help in setting up a dialogue with the rail industry but so far no response received.

Vacancy for committee member

We have a vacancy to join our committee and we are looking for a doer to help us further our work, if anyone would like to be considered please contact the secretary.

Subscription Renewals and New Members

We have been amazed at the continuing receipt of subscriptions put through our letterboxes. Several members have suggested that we continue, in this Covid period, to add the tear-off slip at the end of our article as they say they know friends who lost the last edition of the magazine with its tear-off slip and want to send in their subs.

Again we repeat our thanks to the many residents who responded to our calls to renew subs and welcome to those new members of the Society. We continue to be very encouraged by your response and thank everyone who sent in their subs.

Please may we make another reminder - Everyone’s current membership ran out at the end of September so we really do need your help to get back the substantial membership numbers we are privileged to have.

So we are asking our loyal supporters if you will send in your subscriptions and for any new members to join us by paying the annual sum of £1 or £2 for a family membership

Apart from the subscription which helps to fund our activities, the response of the councils and authorities with whom we engage is influenced if we have a significantly large membership which demonstrates good community support. So even if you can’t volunteer for any of our projects please join to boost our membership numbers.

We invite all to join the Society or to renew your membership. It helps us to continue our work to improve the appearance of our villages & the quality of life within them.

Annual subscription is only £1 for a single membership or £2 for the family which will be valid until end September 2021.

Please tear off the slip below and send your subscription/donation to
